Why workship Gajalakshami?

Goddess Gaja Lakshmi is seen as the wealth of elephants, representing their grace, strength, and power, and she grants these qualities to her worshippers. Known also as Raj Lakshmi, she blesses people with the power to rule, fortune, self-knowledge, and spiritual freedom.

According to the story, Gaja Lakshmi was born from the primordial sea through churning. The tale goes that Maharishi Durwasa, a great sage, gave a garland to Indra, the King of the Gods. Indra, feeling it beneath his dignity to accept such a simple gift, placed it around his elephant’s neck. This angered Durwasa, who cursed the gods to lose all their wealth.

Stripped of their luxuries and power, the gods sought help from Lord Brahma, who then approached Lord Vishnu. They were advised to churn the primordial sea, Ksheer Sagar, to reclaim their lost wealth and powers. The gods, being powerless, enlisted the help of demons for the task. As they churned the sea, many precious things emerged. Indra received a four-tusked white elephant named Iravata, and Lord Vishnu distributed elixir among the gods. Among the treasures that appeared, Goddess Lakshmi emerged, surrounded by eight elephants carrying golden pots, showering her with water.

Goddess Lakshmi restored the gods’ wealth and power, and she chose to marry Lord Vishnu, joining him in his abode, Vaikuntha. Because she was accompanied by elephants and provided prosperity and power, she became known as Gaja Lakshmi.

One of the eight manifestations of the goddess Lakshmi, Gajalakshmi—known as “elephant Lakshmi” or “Lakshmi with elephants”—is believed to bestow and symbolize wealth, good fortune, abundance, fertility, and well-being.

In Hindu and Buddhist religions, elephants are sacred symbols representing loyalty, power, wisdom, and fertility. They are closely associated with water and rainfall, with their shape, size, and color often symbolizing clouds.

In many places in Goa and Konkan, Gajalakshmi is worshipped as a fertility goddess. She is primarily known by the names Gajantlakshmi, Gajalakshmi, Kelbai, or Bhauka Devi and is revered by various Konkani communities as their tutelary deity.

Gaja Lakshmi Puja is performed to attain success, fortune, and joy. Goddess Gaja Lakshmi, symbolizing the wealth of elephants, represents grace, power, strength, and fertility.
